Barclays is closing but you can bank at the Post Office

Categories: East Sheen,East Sheen News

East Sheen’s last bank branch, the Barclays on the corner of Sheen Lane and the Upper Richmond Road is closing on 26th November 2020. The nearest Barclays branch will be in Richmond, on George Street.

Sheen will not be left fully without banking services, however, because you can access your high street bank account in the Post Office. This service is free and as long as you have your debit card with you, you can check your balance and withdraw or deposit cash. Both East Sheen (234 Upper Richmond Road West) and Mortlake (68 Mortlake High Street) Post Offices offer these services.

The Post Office’s free everyday banking service is available to both businesses and individuals. You can deposit most banks’ cheques via the Post Office too, but you will need a pre-printed paying in slip and a branded envelope – make sure you get these from your bank beforehand. If you don’t have a debit card, some banks will still allow you to deposit cash via the Post Office, as long as you have a deposit slip.

However, you can’t transfer money from your account at the Post Office, or get advice on savings, credit cards or mortgages offered by your bank. For these, and more complicated tasks, like lasting power of attorney or grant of probate, you need to visit an actual bank branch. Check which banks offer what services at the Post Office here.

Please remember that at the Post Office, the first hour of every day is for elderly or vulnerable customers and those working in NHS or care services. Please observe social distancing rules and wear a face covering.

Banks and building societies say that changes in customer behaviour have been the main driver of closures. People increasingly bank online and make far fewer visits to branches. Last year Barclays said whether the East Sheen branch will be closed or not was to be reviewed every 18 months – if enough locals used their services, the branch would stay for a while.

In recent years, 40% of all bank branches in the Richmond Park constituency have closed according to research by Which!. From December, this percentage will be sadly 100% for East Sheen.
