The local branch of Santander on Upper Richmond Road is due to permanently close on 25 July 2019 which means that East Sheen will be left with just one bank, Barclays on the corner of Upper Richmond Road and Sheen Lane.
This time last year we still had three different branches. NatWest East Sheen branch closed on 4th June last year so their customers will need to travel to Richmond if they need to access services in person. After Santander East Sheen closes this summer, the nearest alternative branch will be in Richmond at 35-38 George Street.
Barclays, for now, is here to stay, at least for the next 18 months. Whether the East Sheen branch will be closed or not is reviewed every 18 months – if enough locals use their services, the branch will stay for a while.
Banks say the closure of branches has been driven by a rapid increase in online and mobile banking, and a rapid decline in use of physical branches. According to research by Which?, nationwide 2,868 branches have closed in the three years between 2015 and 2018.
