Are you a parent or grandparent? Would you like to do something amazing and help local families with children under 5?
Home-Start UK is the leading family support charity. They offer outreach services through volunteers giving regular support, friendship and practical help to families with young children who may be under stress. This support can be fundamental to helping prevent family crisis and breakdown.
The Richmond scheme, based on Sheen Lane, was set up in 1995 and serves the borough of Richmond upon Thames, Kingston upon Thames and Hounslow.
The next free training course for new volunteers will run for seven weeks, from 10:00-14:30 on Thursdays from 27th April to 15th June (excluding half term). The course will be held in the East Sheen office. If you can’t make this course but are interested, courses run three times a year – January, April and September.
The course will cover an introduction to Home-Start, Safeguarding, Boundaries, Listening Skills, Confidentiality, Values and Attitudes, Parenting and Play, plus supporting families with issues such as bereavement and loss, special needs, mental illness, early language development and domestic abuse.
It is free of charge and can be accredited (NVQ level 1 or 2) if desired. Once trained, you will be matched with a family and will visit them for 2-3 hours a week, giving practical and emotional support.
